My cat is allergic to fish!!

Last week, one of our kitties (we call her P but her name is Panthera) was hiding out in the basement. For those of you who know her, she is gregarious, always underfoot, always yelling for something! And she and Will love each other, he mauls her all the time and she loves it. So I went to find her and see what was going on, since it’s unlike her to hide, and she was covered in scabs!! Like all over her body! So I called the vet the next morning and got her an appointment, and in the meantime started reading… and found out that scabs all over is a huge sign of food allergies! AND, it just so happened that Meijer was out of their regular Iams food, so I got them something different… I thought, “Hmm, salmon! That would be a nice change!!”

So the vet checked her all over, gave her a shot of cortisone (which made her better literally in 1-2 days) and gave me some antibiotics to give her. Unfortunately she needs them for 3 weeks (the skin problems are kind of like a staph infection but not contagious) and I’m having a heck of a time giving them to her. I have to towel her and she drools out half of it. She’s also on some hypoallergenic food for now. The vet recommended some new food, I got some and it’s got all kinds of stuff in it – sweet potato, blueberries, rosemary… they like it though!

I have to bring her back in on Friday for another check up, and to get more antibiotics. I really wonder how much of it she is getting, since she drools out half of it now. Usually they have you mix it with tuna, but since she is allergic to fish, I have eliminated all fish from their diet right now. I just don’t want to take steps backwards at this time! Poor kitty.

  1. Poor P!!!

The things we do for our pets, huh. And of course it’s worth it, but poor you, pregnant, chasing a toddler, and now taking care of a scabby kitty… (Like Bill the Cat… ACK PHTT!)

Hope she gets better soon so her and Will can play again!

  2. Our kitty became extremely allergic to fish and grains. He had large bloody sores on his paw. When treated by a vet he gave him two injections of cortisone and when there was no improvement the cat was prescribed three weeks worth of predisone. From the predisone he developed diabetes. Now we are having to give him insulin shots twice a day. After major searching we found a wonderful line of food. It is called NATURAL BALANCE GREEN PEA AND DUCK by Dick Van Patten. It is available in dry and wet. This food does have salmon oil and herring however because they are oils and not meal or meat cats are not allergic to the oils. Our cat is now recovering and the sore is healing. Please note there is another line of food with nearly the same name, so please read the label carefully. This line of food has a good write up but should you have any questions, do call the company. They were extremely helpful and the best is that they are the only company that put out a line for cats with grain or fish allergies.
Best Wishes to you and A Speedy Recovery to your P

  3. ps. Our cat developed diabetes, called “Diabetes secondary to steriod use”
The vet said some times felines’ diabetes does reverse. Our cats has undergone several glucose tests and we are happy to report that after each test we are giving our cat injections with less and less insulin.
We hope that the diabetes will reverse and he will have not need to have insulin injections.
This note is for all those owners have cats that develop sores on their bodies. Before giving your cat predisone find out what is causing the sores. More and more cats are develping allergies due to the food that we are feeding them. In our case we were giving our cats excellent food the fact is that the cats developed an allergy to fish which most holistic and other foods contain as fish is an excellent source for everyone.
