I want to make a sweater

But the yarn store does not have my yarn in, YET.  Next week, it will have been TWO MONTHS since I ordered it.  There was apparently a mix up with the company and it never got sent.  I really, really like this local yarn store and I really like the people who work there, but I just cannot order yarn there again.  I really had hoped to be going on it by now but it’s still not here.  They said they went and ordered it again but I have not heard a word since.  I might stop by there this week and I might decide to ask for my money back and order it elsewhere.  If it is not in by the end of the year, I will DEFINITELY do that.

In the meantime, I’ve made a bunch of other little stuff.  Everyone got hats, and I’m finishing things I started a while ago.  I have a couple of pairs of socks in the making but honestly I got a little burned out on socks.  Sorry, no photos, but you can check out the updated pics I do have by looking at my Ravelry page.

November

I haven’t updated in a while, but after my son’s birthday and the news of getting the land, there really hasn’t been a whole lot of news. Fall has abruptly ended and winter is here it seems, usually we get a few more weeks of fall where I live but not this year. Today we are supposed to get snow and they are predicting 3-6 inches. Not much compared to home, but it’s enough for here. I’m sure later today I’ll dig out the boots and snow pants and let the kids go nuts.

Today I need to make a couple of phone calls and possibly talk to my real estate agent to schedule a closing date for the land. That will probably take place the first week of December.

For Thanksgiving this year we are having dinner at my mother and father in law’s. They just live 25 minutes from here so not a lot of traveling.

My son is doing great with potty training. He even woke up in the night to go one night! Most of the time he is totally dry in the morning but he isn’t really reliable in running to pee the first thing when he gets up. Once he is better at that, we can probably switch to underwear at night too. I just never thought this would ever happen. I think what finally lit a fire under his butt was seeing his friend’s 1 1/2 year old brother peeing and pooping in the potty. Sophie has kind of lost interest and that’s OK, she doesn’t really hold her pee for long yet anyway and is always soaking wet in the morning. All in good time! One in diapers sure is better than two!

Not a whole lot of other news today. I had just realized it’s been many days since I blogged and I probably should post something already! My husband has a 4 day weekend this weekend so that will be nice. We do not shop Black Friday ever, for any reason, so we’ll plan on staying home that day. We both really hate Christmas shopping, crowds of people and horrendous traffic. (I do like buying gifts for people, but I wish I could do ALL of it online!! A Christmas shopping rant sounds like a topic for a good future post!) Good day to stay home and drink hot chocolate!

We’ve got land!!! And, new blog!

After searching for about 2 years, I’m happy to announce the latest member of our family – 12 acres of dirt!!

It all happened very fast. We found out about the listing the day it was listed, and we put an offer in the next day. The following day it was accepted! We couldn’t believe it. It’s in a perfect location, nice quiet road, not many neighbors, in fact there is nothing but a field across the road. It’s 12 acres of farm field. It’s been tilled under for the winter so there isn’t even grass on it! But we should be able to get in there and plant trees in the spring if we want.  We wanted to stay in our current school district and we’re in the same township.  It will put my husband about 5 minutes closer to work.

We don’t yet have a closing date but I’m currently working on getting a mortgage broker. The price was amazingly good on the land so we won’t need to borrow much, but I still need to go through the process.

We eventually want to build a house on it. I have decided to start a home building blog, to chronicle the whole process, from now, til we move in. If you care to follow along, take a look at An Adventure in Home Construction.

A 4 year old’s birthday

Our son Will turned 4 yesterday (November 11th). A few things (well, more than a few things) are a little different this year. He is pretty much a regular kid now. And, I am WAY less nostalgic about his birth. Both feel like the natural way of things, but definite changes that I noticed.

For example – when I asked him what he wanted to do during the day while his dad was at work, he said he wanted to play with friends. So we went to our local community center where they have the gymnastics room set up for little kids and we met friends there. He ran around and played, and after that we went to his friends’ house for lunch (McDonald’s!). When we were done there, we came home, put Sophie to bed, and when she woke up, we went to Chuck E Cheese’s! After a couple of hours there, we came home and opened presents. He is now all about the toys. We got a very nice gift from my aunt and uncle, but he was disappointed that it wasn’t a toy. I remember feeling the same when I was a kid and I never expected anything different, but I did think, well, now we have arrived at this.

Of course I will always remember his birth, and the 50 hours that preceded it. It seems longer ago now, and more surreal, but it’s one of those things that you don’t forget. I always remember every November 9th that we went in to be induced, and then on the 10th I remember that we were still there, then during the day on the 11th I remember that we were STILL there and he was finally born at 7:35 pm. Of course I’d thought it was the induction until Sophie, when my labor started on its own and went on for several days. Why I have such nasty long labors, I have no idea, but it’s unlikely even if I do ever understand it, that I will ever experience it again.

We are having a small family party on Saturday, it will be small and brief. For now, my living room floor is covered in a huge Thomas Action Canyon set, and what is left, in Lightening McQueen. After Saturday I’m not sure what we will get. I just cannot fathom the volume of toys they will go through in their lifetimes. It’s actually quite frightening.

It’s kind of strange, having a 4 year old. I’ve been in the baby thing now for so long that having a little bit of an older kid who can do what you ask (when he wants) and listen (when he wants) and is at least predictable is weird but good. But, it’s still Will, just a slightly older version of him. I can’t imagine Sophie at 4. Seems like a long way off. Being a parent does weird things to your brain and sense of time. Some days seem to never end, yet others fly by like they didn’t exist.

So, to end this post on a much less serious note, he has been dry now for close to a week. No poop accidents and only pee issues occasionally at night or first thing in the morning. YAY for Will!! We’re so proud of him!!

Project Bathroom

When we bought this house in 1998, the master bath was full of water damage. When we started remodeling it, we actually had to replace wall studs and some of the subfloor because the shower tiles leaked and it just pretty much rotted everything. We could not even sleep in our bedroom when we had the bathroom ripped up! We even had to cut a hole in the end of the hall to get the shower stall in. So it was quite a project.

You could imagine our dismay when signs of water damage started appearing in the vinyl around the toilet. It was not long after our big remodel was done (within the first year I’m guessing) and after replacing the wax ring on the toilet, we thought we’d fixed it for good. Fast forward through a wedding, vinyl siding, two pregnancies each resulting in births of children who do not sleep, and a few weeks ago we had water on the floor. We always knew we would have to replace the flooring before we would sell this house someday but now we knew we had to bite it and just do it.

My husband has election day off and decided to use his last day of vacation for the year today. The floor came out Saturday afternoon after shopping for stuff all morning, and the new floor went in yesterday and today. I bought more vinyl for the floor this morning and got the paint this afternoon. The water supply for the toilet got replumbed. I just painted the first coat this evening and will probably put on coat number two tonight when the kids are in bed. I debated it but I’ll have less clean up and less to do tomorrow.

The plan tomorrow is to install the vinyl, put the cabinet and fixtures back in, and replace the toilet. We don’t know if the old one has a tiny crack but I am inclined to buy a new one, because we sure don’t want to do this room a third time! And during this time we are going to need to go vote. The polling place for our area is very close so my husband will go early in the morning and I’ll go later whenever it’s easier for him to keep an eye on the kids. Then I’ll have a whole pile of cleaning to do. When we cut out the old floor, it created a lot of dust which of course went everywhere. I am sure I’ll be cleaning it the rest of the week. But, we’ll have a pretty new bathroom that hopefully will stay dry until the end of time!
