Sophie’s 6 month check

We went to the doctor yesterday and everything is fine, except that I’m not feeling the love for my doctor anymore. I had complained that Sophie doesn’t sleep and she told me I needed to let her cry because as long as her physical needs are being met, “she is manipulating you!” WTF!!!! I guess this is a good example of why doctors are better at caring for your medical needs than giving parenting advice. She always tells me how wonderful my kids are so I wonder if she understands that a lot of that is because we tend to their needs during the day AND the night? AND, she didn’t “get it” that Sophie just got a tooth, has learned to sit, is learning to crawl and has started to babble? And that those developmental changes can disrupt sleep? Again, doctors = good for diagnosing an ear infection, but bad for child psychology. THANK GOODNESS I’ve got my LLL knowledge and the confidence of already helping one child sleep at night under my belt so that I could tell her I would never let my baby cry at night… I told her, how awful would I feel if something was upsetting me and I was crying my heart out at night and there were people in the house who were deliberately ignoring me? She still insisted I was being manipulated. So I guess when Sophie turns 18 she will rob me blind because I help her in the night. The next 17 years won’t matter a bit what I do, because THIS YEAR I am helping her at night. Whatever. I’m going to put this in the BS category because that kind of advice is just that – **********BS*********

Of course she is really for breastfeeding and since genetically my babies are just big, there was nothing critical said about my nursing… in fact she tells me I’m a good nurser (LOL). What would happen if I made smaller babies, would I be a bad nurser? ROFLMAO

Now, for the stats: She weighs 18 pounds, and is 27 1/2 inches long (you can subtract an inch from that because I’ve seen how the nurse measures and she always tends to measure long). My husband thought she was going to be 20 pounds and I thought she’d be 17 so we were both wrong! I told her that we’d started on a little food but that she doesn’t digest it. Dr: “What do you mean, she doesn’t digest it?” Me: “What she eats comes out exactly the same way in her poop – bits of banana come out looking like bits of banana, sweet potato comes out looking like sweet potato!” What the H*** else would I mean? Anyway she asked if there have been any food intolerances at all and I told her that she’d gotten some rice cereal and was crabby all night… but that was OK because it’s just starch fortified with vitamins, nothing she needs now! Of course I got a funny look from her about that, and I told her she could have real rice later (I’ll cook up some brown rice nice and soft for her!). Will liked his baby cereal but he just couldn’t tolerate the texture of any cereal other than that for a long time. I’ll see how she does. I’ve got a ripe avocado on my counter that she might get a taste of today. I hope she likes it because if she doesn’t, I’ll be eating a LOT of guacamole in the next day or two! I’m the only one in the house who likes it (that I know of)!

As you can see from the tone of this post I’m still pretty peeved at my doctor… I just didn’t think she was “that” kind of person. But, her kids are all grown and she’s got grandkids so she is probably just falling back to the parenting advice of her day… miserably outdated of course… she must not have seen the Harvard Cry It Out study that just came out!! Maybe I’ll print it off and mail it to her. Actually what a good idea. :)

ETA:  THAT STUDY CAME OUT IN 1998!!!!!!  Freakin NINE years ago!!  Check out the date on the link.  Arrrrgh!  I hate it when people who are supposedly educated don’t know basic things like this but a regular old mother does?

Teething

Sophie got her first tooth this weekend.  It finally broke through yesterday/today and I can see the top of it now.

Ironically, Will is just getting his last two molars in, finally.  Then he’ll be all done, and in a few years, all this work of getting through teething will slap me back in the face when they all start getting loose and falling out.  I told him that in a few years that would start to happen and he wasn’t very happy about it, so we’ve dropped the subject for now.

I have two teething kids, two in diapers, two nursing, and two that speak the same language.  Sophie was born about 3 years to the day that Will was conceived.  Hope they are best of friends throughout their lives.

A day out with Thomas

Today we just happened to see that “A Day Out with Thomas” was happening this weekend. On a spur of the moment, we decided we should go. We weren’t able to get tickets for the actual train ride, but there were a lot of other things to do. The whole event took place at the Huckleberry Railroad and Crossroads Village near Flint. It’s kind of like an old historical village where people dress the part and you can see them going about their business. There is an actual working railroad that is open for rides during the year and they actually have a life size Thomas the Tank Engine that pulls (or rather, is at the head of) the train! Will of course went nuts, he wanted a ride but we couldn’t get tickets… we got to see Thomas leaving the station though and got some good pictures.

Crossroads Village also has some barnyard animals (Will had to check out the “ees” on the mama cow!) and some old fashioned carnival rides. We had fun on those and had lunch. Sophie actually was hungry enough that she would nurse instead of looking up at the trees. Of course there was a big shopping area FULL of Thomas stuff (all made in China I’m sure) and by that time Will was fried. We tried to buy him a couple of things but he freaked out and pushed it away! He just wanted to stay and play with all the toys they had set up. It was after 5 pm and he was just done. I bought two books, one of them is a board book about all the engines and the other is a nice hardcover book of all the original stories written by Rev. Audry. I saw that book once at a friend’s house and decided I had to buy it if I ever saw it anywhere for sale.

We also bought a used wooden swing set with a slide and bridge on it today! We’ll have to get ahold of someone’s trailer and go pick it up from Bay City. It needs a little work but since those things run up to almost $2,000, we though it was a steal at $50, heck you can’t even buy a slide for less than $100!

Public Service Announcement from ThisFinnGarianMama

There are a lot of things I like about WordPress but one thing I really like is checking blog statistics.  I can see what posts get read the most often and even what people type into Google that eventually brings them to my blog.  As of now, the posts that get found the most often, by far, are about mono.  I’ve also had quite a few searches about scabby/allergic cats, and, strangely enough, Lebanese coffee!  So, maybe I’ll do a little FYI about my thoughts/information on these topics.

Lebanese coffee is awesome.  The kind I got is ground very fine, kind of like espresso, but I don’t make it like espresso.  I just brew it in my old fashioned stainless percolator pot on the stove (that thing makes coffee that will grab you by the shoulders and slap your a$$ awake in the morning!!).  I am sure there is a special kind of pot or brewing process they use in Lebanon, maybe the next time I’m shopping at Yasmeen’s I’ll ask them.  I like my coffee nice and dark and when I first poured a cup of this I was a little scared!  But it’s really very smooth.  Just limit your intake of it to the morning or you’ll be up for a week.  Actually that’s an exaggeration.  But it’s mighty good.

About scabby cats.  One of my cats is allergic to fleas, and I suspect is allergic to fish also.  When she has a reaction, her whole body breaks out in scabs.  They seem to be the worst around her neck and tail.  My vet said all it takes is ONE flea bite per WEEK in sensitive kitties like mine to make this type of reaction.  And, that fleas can come into your house THROUGH YOUR WINDOW SCREEN!!  Our cats don’t go outside but now they are on Frontline forever.  I was just getting P. cleared up when it became summer again and now we are back to square one.  It’s kind of gross petting a scabby cat.

Mononucleosis is a viral illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.  You can wikipedia it but I believe it does something funky to the nuclei of your white blood cells.  Most of the time it is not harmful but it is a huge pain in the butt.  It often comes with strep throat but not always.  It is spread by saliva which is odd for me (since I’m not a college student kissing a bunch of strange guys) but maybe not that odd since my 2 year old touches everything, then licks me… go figure!  Mono basically makes you feel like you are getting the flu pretty much every day for months.  Fatigue, fever, body aches, night sweats, headaches, sore throat… oh and did I mention that no matter how much sleep you get you still feel like shit?  Since it is viral there is nothing you can do but let it run its course.  You are also contagious for several weeks before you get symptoms.  One test for diagnosing it is the Epstein Barr virus titer, which shows antibodies to the virus.  You can get two different kinds, one shows if you’ve had the virus in your body for weeks, the other, for years.  And, it can flare up, if you don’t get enough rest or are under too much stress.  I have read that you can’t get it more than once but I know several people who have had it twice.

There, now I’ve posted about the three most popular subjects in my blog.  I’m actually doing this just to see what happens to my statistics, not because it’s exciting reading or even that interesting!  I think one of my other hot topics was pregnancy but I posted about that so much that I don’t care to go back and revisit it.

I love Middle Eastern food!!

Today I packed up the kids and met a friend at Yasmeen’s in Saginaw.  They have opened a deli in their store and the food is soooo good!  Today I tried their tabouli and had some stuffed grape leaves too.  I just love going there, being in the store makes me happy and the food makes me happy… what I really need is a huge group of Arab friends.  I wonder where I can find some?  If anyone knows, please tell me!  (Or, introduce me!)  I’m serious too!  Speaking English need not be a requirement!  (But it would be great if they had little kids!)

Otherwise, on the kid front, Sophie I think is going to pop a tooth through any time.  She’s got a spot on her gums that feels like there is one coming but she won’t let me get a good look at it.  She has been nursing a TON and now I’m STARVING ALL THE TIME and just can’t seem to eat enough!  She is also really close to crawling, she will get on all 4’s and rock back and forth.

Will really likes her.  He likes to play with her but sometimes gets a little too excited.  His vocabulary has just exploded since she was born and that’s great because I like having conversations with him.  Sometimes it’s hard to get him to tell me what’s on his mind but after a little prodding I can usually get something out!

Adding a bonus random thing!

Here’s my bonus #9!

Here are some things I want to do someday in my lifetime:  fly a plane, get a ham radio license, volunteer for the fire department, travel throughout northern Europe, especially the UK and Scandinavia, give a lecture to medical students/residents about breastfeeding,  and finally, I really want to make friends with people in all cultures and nationalities… I’d love some Chinese friends, some Arab friends, some Ethiopian friends, I just find cultures other than my own so interesting and it would be great to continue to understand more people.  I knew people from all walks of life and many countries when I was a student at Michigan Tech but it seems like it’s hard to connect nowadays unless one happens to work with a diverse population…

I’ve been tagged!! 8 Random things…

Amberjee at Sleep Is For The Weak just tagged me! So here we go! :) 8 random things about myself.

1. I am a certified rescue diver. I did my scuba training in college and used to dive in Lake Superior. The coldest water temp I had was about 35 degrees and the warmest, only about 58!

2. My family has not been in the US that long. My grandparents on one side were born in Hungary, and my great grandparents on the other side, in Finland.

3. I’ve been a registered nurse since 1992. The hardest thing I ever had to do was work on a baby who had been injured, to find out the next day that he’d died. The best thing I ever saw was birth and the most peaceful, death. I have found that being a full time mother is the best job of all.

4. I have never met anyone famous but I have a friend who sang on stage with Barry Manilow! I was there!

5. A few years ago I did a counted cross stitch of the Mona Lisa. It’s huge. My husband said I would never finish it so of course I had to then!

6. My job in college was sewing costumes in the theatre. Had a great time. I ran my finger over with the sewing machine one day while I was working on a man’s silk suit coat. It went through the nail and bone and came out the other side. I had to go to the emergency room to have it taken out. I didn’t get a drop of blood on the suit and finished it when I came back to work.

7. I love belly dancing!! I haven’t done ANY since my daughter was born but I sure would love to get back into it someday. And, I’m about a size 20 right now! :D I can dance with a sword balanced on my head.

8. Another job I had in college (before the sewing job) was in radio. My job was to make sure the ads were played during the satellite feeds and I also read the news, sports and weather. It was fun! I used my real name on the air.

There ya go! I’m going to tag Cinnamonamon next, I hope she will play with me!

Yesterday was INSANE!

I had this whole thing written out last night and when I hit “publish”, it was gone!!!

It all started with about 4 calls from TV5 news first thing in the morning. I’d called them the day before about the Salvation Army scam and they wanted to come over to interview me. I didn’t think this was a good idea because the guy knows where I live and that I have two small kids at home, yet another person called in an attempt to change my mind. I told them I’d do a phone interview but that was it. Disgruntled, he hung up and I didn’t hear back from them at all. Nobody did show up at my house yesterday but my friend Annie came by with a couple of beers and a cold one sure did taste good at 12:00 pm!

So as the day went on, I took a couple more LLL calls, nothing major, actually they were quite easy to handle. Sophie took a really long nap and Will had a really short one, his nose got all clogged up from his cold and he woke up after about 45 mintues just crying! So he was pretty crabby the rest of the day.

When my husband got home we were trying to decide what to do that evening, when we heard a CLUNK and sudden screaming… Sophie had fallen off the bed. :( The bed is a mile high and usually she lets me know she’s awake before moving around, this time she didn’t and just started playing. So now she won’t be able to nap in the bed unless I’m right there, or if we get a baby monitor. It will have to be the cosleeper for now.

Then I’d gotten a phone call from a friend that they had found a pigeon wandering around M46, which is a major road, pretty busy one. It was friendly and has a leg band. I don’t know anyone who is missing a pigeon but if you do, please let me know!

So after all that, we decided to go to the fair. Will rode such BIG rides it seems! (they were kiddie rides but it was SO weird to see my baby riding on rides by himself!!!) We ate greasy fair food that ALWAYS sounds a lot better than it actually is (yuck) and kept the kids out way too late. Then we came home, they got baths and we all went to bed after WordPress ate my post I’d worked on!

That brings us to this morning. I woke up and found a message on my answering machine from the SALVATION ARMY! Stating they wanted to reschedule the pick up!!! So right away I called the police but was unable to add anything to the report because the officer was now off til Sunday??? WTF???? So after not getting any help from them I called the lady at the SA office to see if the name or phone number they left on my machine sounded familiar. She said the phone number was the number you could call if you had a couch or something huge that needed picking up, but she’d make some calls and call me back. When she did, it turns out there WAS a legitimate drive, it was the SA office in Flint, and they’d been calling people at random in Midland and Lansing and apparently never notified the Midland office. SO, now there is a police report, a notice in the newspaper that should come out today, TV5 had called them, it’s a big mess!! All because they never notified Midland what they were doing.

My life is always so boring and that’s just fine, because all of this is giving me a huge headache!!!

HOLY **BLEEEEP**

OK I’m pretty freaked out now…

The other day I got a phone call from the Salvation Army, stating they were looking for donations and would be able to come by with a truck on Thursday (tomorrow) at noon to pick things up if I wanted.  I told them that would be great.  In the meantime, we have some old furniture and a lot of other things to give away.

I phoned the Salvation Army today to ask them if they had room in the truck for a lazy boy chair.  They said THEY DO NOT EVER SOLICIT BY PHONE, and now I am wondering WHO this guy was!!!  They said they would call a couple more people and call me back.  They verified that nobody from their organization was calling people but that they had gotten another similar call earlier today.  I told them I’d gotten a call on Monday and maybe they should alert the news to warn people?

In the meantime I called the sheriff’s office to see what I should do, they said if anyone shows up at my house tomorrow I need to call 911 right away, and they would come out.  The SA lady I talked to on the phone said they were going to file a police report.  I mistakenly told the man (the scammer) that it was hard to get in with my stuff because I HAVE TWO SMALL KIDS… what a f-ing idiot am I?????  I’m sure once I tell my husband he is going to be pretty worried.  This is very freaky.  I’m pretty damn nervous now and not at all happy about this!!  I don’t want to not be here, I wonder if someone would try to break in… well this sucks on top of everything else.  Hopefully it will just be a quiet day around here tomorrow…

Now we have colds…

And I still have mono… this sucks.  Sophie slept like crap last night and the longest stretch I got was just about 1 hour.  All the other stretches were less than 45 minutes.  She is teething too.  Now I have a sore throat and runny/itchy nose and a headache and a slight fever and I just feel like hell.  Why can this not get better…
